When Does ASB Meet?

The ASB class is sixth period; however, each member’s responsibilities reach far beyond class time. If you have a job to do and either don’t have time in class or don’t finish in class, it is expected that you will complete the task on your own time. Additionally, there are a handful of times throughout the year that the entire class meets and works outside of school. For example, we spend the night before and the morning of a rally in the gym. We also volunteer with local groups and organizations, such as St. Vincent’s and the town of San Anselmo, a number of times each year after school and on the weekends.

What Positions Can an ASB Member Hold?

1. A general ASB member is admitted by the Interview Council (see below) and holds no specific title.

2. Crew Captain: the ASB class is divided into “Crews” that focus on certain aspects of what we need to accomplish. Each Crew is lead by one or two Crew Captains. The Crews are as follows:

a. Pirate TV: This Crew is famed and fabulous for their twice-monthly productions of Pirate TV. The episodes air to (ideally) all advisories and are public for viewing online. They include a club spotlight, announcements from ASB, administration, and other groups and individuals on campus, upcoming sports and events, and entertaining, enlightening information for students, teachers, and parents. This Crew plans, films, edits, and publishes episodes with artistry and efficiency.

b. Publicity: The Publicity Crew is in charge of taking the work of the other Crews and making it public. It is their job to alert the student body and larger community about upcoming events, new opportunities, and everything in between. They have many vessels for communication such as the Drake Flush, the Twitter and Facebook pages, the Instagram account, and, of course, one can never go wrong with posters, and lots of them.

c. Staff Student Appreciation: Staff/Student Appreciation is dedicated to recognizing our amazing student body, faculty, and staff on a regular basis. They put on events such as the Staff Book Swap, Staff Gift Wrap, and Validation Stations, and manage programs like the Fabulous Freshmen, Random Acts of Kindness, and the DHS Anonymous Compliments Facebook page

d. Athletics: As one of the fittest schools in the state according to fitness testing encouragements speeches via the P.E. Department, our ASB class also seeks to keep our student body active and engaged. This includes the frequent ping pong and dodgeball tournaments, corn hole and kickball games, Green Room games, halftime festivities, and much more. In addition to planning and executing these events, Athletics is also responsible for recognizing all athletes and sports at Drake, which can be through events, rallies, or more.

e. Events: The Events Crew is the most visible on campus because they put on a wide variety of events for the student body. These range from lunchtime activities, spirit days, and advisory competitions to rallies, which are a whole class effort led by this Crew. They bring much of the fun and games to ASB and Drake and even beyond.

f. Outreach: Outreach is tasked with extending the reach of our ASB into our school and the surrounding community. It is important that our class reinforces our dedication to service, not just to fun for our students. This includes a wide range of ASB events and projects, such as the Canned Food Drive, square dancing with residents from Cedars of Marin, volunteering at the SF Food Bank, various events for the Town of San Anselmo, and campaigns such as Acceptance Week and Make a Difference Day.

How Is The Class Structured?

The ASB President generally runs class, facilitates discussion, and makes sure that each Crew is working efficiently. As previously stated, the ASB class, with the exception of the ASB President and VP, is divided into six Crews. While each Crew has their own responsibilities, a solid percent of the time is spent as an entire group working on whole-class tasks. The one or two Crew Captains in each Crew remain in charge of that given Crew throughout the entire year; however, the rest of the ASB members circulate throughout the Crews roughly five times per year.

How Does The Application Process Work?

The personality and success of our ASB class largely depends on the individual members. As such, we put a lot of time and effort into the application process and creating our class. An Interview Council composed of  sophomores and juniors was chosen based on the interviewers’ diverse perspectives and commitment to the ASB program. Once you have submitted your application, it will be read anonymously (your name isn’t on it) by the Interview Council. Each interviewer then evaluates your application based on a number of criteria, including leadership experience & potential, balance of character & activities, vision, and written communication.

Once you have submitted your application, you will be contacted for an in-person interview with the entire Interview Council. The interview will be approximately 15 minutes and is an opportunity for you to express yourself in a non-paper format. Like the written application, the interview is evaluated based on your responsibility, organization, & time management, your perseverance, your interpersonal communication & articulation, and the “3 Cs” (character, creativity, and curiosity).

Once the Interview Council has evaluated all of the written applications as well as the in-person interviews, the two evaluations are combined for each person. The entire decision process is largely a numerical (and, for the written application, anonymous) process. We have used the numerical evaluation method for the past couple of years and have found it to be very successful and a great way to create a hard-working and cohesive ASB.
